SOME THOUGHTS IN SUPPORT OF HOTEL "GREENING

Date: 6/1/2008

In sun-exposed guest or function rooms, consider installation of window draperies

with reflective surface to supplement any awning or special tinted glass surfaces

provided. Instruct staff to close the draperies when the room is prepared for

occupancy. Determine how many lights or lamps should be on to avoid entering a

darkened room; but avoiding every light in on position.

Consider installation of a thermostat limits band. Perhaps a range of 68 degrees F to

78 degrees F. It is interesting the perception of cool or warm will generally occur

when the guest set limits that may be at 65 degrees F or 85 degrees F on the guest

room controls.

Bring the professional in for re-calibrating equipment on the premises. Include all

HVAC equipment, boilers, water heaters, spa, sauna, hot tub and delivery temperature

at faucet, showerhead. or any other device requiring calibration.

Establish a program for water conservation and use. Is it possible to recycle rinse

water for initial wash in the laundry? May grey water be recovered from sewage

water for irrigation or fire emergency use? Or, is the urgency of need such that the

sewage water may be processed for washing and drinking use? Does the maintenance

program cover removal of scale and general control of the mixing valves in water

distribution and use in faucets and showerheads? Are flushometers regularly

inspected and adjusted to maintain the correct flow of water during the flush

operation? If not on a proper maintenance schedule,

some units may flush with as much as 5 to 7 gallons of water in a single flush.

If your property is implementing a recycling program, involve the guest by providing

professionally designated containers within the room; for example, receptacles for

paper, glass, or plastic.
