Travel Trivia

Date: 11/1/2008

I have been on a heavy travel schedule in recent months and have encountered incidents which are indirectly a factor impacting the "bottom line." That, after all, is one of the main challenges for this newsletter.

At 87 years young and with a mobility challenge, I regularly request an accessible room. In the past two establishments, the accessible room was at the most distant point from the lobby and food service areas. In the one instance, there was no nearby parking facility where a designated accessible parking space could have supported the remote location of the accessible guest room. In the other instance, there was a parking lot immediately available to the room; but without a designated accessible parking space. With the roll-in shower and other special facilities, it is not feasible to relocate the room. But check for possible designation of accessible parking in proximity to the accessible guest room.

Also, consider the installation of a vertical grab bar at the entrance/exit end of the shower facility. (stall, roll-in or tub) Grasping a horizontal bar while entering or exiting the shower unit is awkward. The horizontal bar is fine if entering for a tub bath; but that is rare.

And a truly trivial one. Share this with housekeeping and its inspection staff. A guest should have the option of relocating furniture (not the bed or entertainment center - mostly chairs and waste baskets) while occupying the room, as long as the change does not create a safety hazard. Similarly, if the room attendant has a favorite radio station, please return the dial to the guest's selection. Trivial but could make the difference in a future reservation.
