This is probably the same device developed by a locksmith in Oregon several years ago. It did not create too much of a problem as it did not make it on "youtube" at that time. Now it does become a challenge and as noted, it's "Scarey!"
You will note the device can be inserted under the door and then manipulated so it moves up the room side of the door surface to disengage the lock and a chain or bar. There were three strategies developed at the time to counter the device:
1. Turn the lever into a vertical position so the device cannot depress the lever.
2. Add a baffle along the bottom of the door so the device cannot be inserted into the room.
3. Add a decorative shunt around the base of the lockset so it deflects the device into the room and renders the device ineffective.
Any of you who have encountered the device and have other protective strategies are requested to share this data with the lodging industry. Please email to raycellis@gmail.com and we will include the information in a future Newsletter. Please indicate if you wish to have the source published or remain anonymous.
